What is the difference between coaching and therapy?
Coaching is not therapy, though it is compatible with therapy
and many clients choose to do both. Imagine therapy as a process
that opens and airs out all the rooms in your house. Coaching
is the process that helps you move into those rooms and make
the most of them.
Coaching holds clients to be whole, resourceful, creative, fully
competent to live the lives they are meant to live. Rather than
exploring and analyzing the past, we focus on the present, on
your current challenges and how best to meet them. While many
clients experience improvements in their mental and emotional
health as they learn to set and reach the goals that are congruent
with their values and that ask the most of their resources, this
is not the focus of a coaching relationship.
Clients come to coaching not because they need it, but because
they are ready for it!
Is Coaching for Me?
Fill out the Coaching questionnaire and this will help you determine
your next move.
What about confidentiality?
As a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF), I adhere
to the highest standards of professional ethics, summarized below.
- I am committed to coaching only in my area of competence,
where legally permitted to practice and in matters, which will
provide real benefit to my clients. If necessary, I refer clients
to other specialists, such as therapists, attorneys, and financial
planners.
- I treat information entrusted to me by clients with strict
confidentiality to the fullest extent allowable under the law.
- I will advise my clients of any circumstances which might
influence my judgement or objectivity.
How Do You Coach?
I coach mostly by phone. I do see some clients in person when
we are first starting our relationship. The coaching process
begins with an intake session, a one and a half hour conference
during which we review the inventories you will have prepared
in advance.
This clarifies your goals and values, identifies opportunities
and obstacles (sometimes the same thing!) and lays the groundwork
for effective communication.
At the intake, we design your coaching process by choosing the
frequency and length of sessions that will be best for you. From
then on we meet by phone at our scheduled times. Coaching continues
between sessions as you implement the strategies you devise during
our sessions.
In summary, I coach by:
Helping people set goals consistent with their
values and we work together to see those goals reached over time.
Ask my clients to do more than they would have done on their
own.
- Approach and encourage the development of the whole person.
- Provide the tools, support, and structure for greater accomplishment
- Encourage momentum and proactive problem solving.
What does coaching cost?
See my Program Options on the other page.
I offer "just-in-time" coaching at the rate of $285
per hour. This service is especially for clients who have completed
coaching and who request occasional focused support for a specific
project or decision.
In preparation for coaching, I ask new clients to prepare a
coaching assessment of where they are and where they want to
go in the coaching relationship. Once the assessment is complete,
we meet ( in person or by phone)for the Intake Session. This
is a special one and a half hour session that jump-starts the
process and allows us to get right to work. The fee for the Intake
Session is $200, payable at the time of the session.
When are fees due?
If you choose to pay by credit card (recommended )I process
your billing on the first of the month. Fees for the intake session
or for "just-in-time" sessions are due at the time
service is rendered.
How long does a client work with you?
Clients typically stay with me an average of nine to fifteen
months. A few clients longer and some who are so committed to
coaching that they intend to work with a coach indefinitely.
Several clients hired me for a short term project, but stayed
because there are always new and interesting things to accomplish.
